Our Gardens

Garden Overview

The Loudoun Heritage Farm Museum is much more than just our indoor spaces.  While it currently looks like a blank canvas, the land is in the process of undergoing a huge transformation coming Spring/Summer 2023.  In partnership with The New Ag School, you will begin to see new garden areas .

Deer Fencing

An anonymous donation allowed the museum to install deer fencing around the back perimeter of the museum.  The new fencing is what makes the garden possible by keeping out prevalent deer and allowing food and other types of plants to be grown.

Community Gardens

For many years, there have been community garden plots that have been available for rent to the side of the museum.  They will be moved inside the deer fencing.  To get more information on renting a community garden bed, contact us.

New Garden Areas

  • Apple Trees - Apple trees will be planted in the front of the museum to reflect the historic apple orchards that once were in Loudoun County.
  • Sensory Garden - Once it is installed, come out and enjoy our balance beam, tire tunnel (made from tractor tires), and our sound board.
  • Grape Arbor - The grape arbor is a nod to the many wineries that are a big part of the agritourism business in Loudoun County.
  • Perennial Beds - Blackberries, blueberries, and asparagus will be growing in our perennial bed area.  The New Ag School is using these as a learning lab for youth to teach them all about growing food as a business.
  • Learning Beds - There will be eight beds to showcasing either historic garden practices (Native American Three Sisters, colonial physic garden, victory garden), cultural beds (Asian vegetable garden, African American vegetable garden, Latino vegetable garden), or Virginia plants (pollinator and native plants).  These beds will be incorporated into our educational materials for school groups.

Garden Installation / Spring Break Camp

Think Outside Program

The new garden would not be possible without the partnership with The New Ag School.  During Spring Break, The New Ag School will be installing or preparing:

  • Irrigation
  • Perennial Beds
  • Grape Arbor
  • Learning Beds
  • Apple Trees

This camp is for youth in grades 7 and above.  The New Ag School believes in growing tomorrow's farmers today.  During this camp, participants will not only get their hands dirty but they will learn about horticulture but gain the skills to run an agricultural business.
