Field Trips (Single Class)

program inquiry

One hour instructor-led programs on a topic of your choosing (see below for offerings). For classes of 30 students or fewer. For larger field trips, see here. Each of the programs listed below can be offered as a one hour program or as a shorter station.

Fee Information ($50 minimum)

  • $5/student 
  • First 2 adults (teachers/TAs) are free
  • $5/additional chaperones and adults

Second Instructor Fee - $25

  • Effective for programs booked on or after August 1, 2026
  • If you are booking a single class program for a group of 20-40 students, we reserve the right to split your group into 2 and charge a flat $25 second instructor fee.
  • Your group will be split in half and swap instructors halfway through the program.

Extra Museum Time - $35

  • Groups of 20 children or fewer can enjoy an extra 30 minutes of museum discovery time to explore all of our interactive exhibits for a $35 flat fee.  
  • If your group is larger than 20, and you wish to have the extra museum time, you must split the group and pay per each group up to 20 students.
  • Only 1 group may be in the museum at a time. The remaining group(s) may enjoy the Sensory Garden or the park outside of the museum for that 30 minutes. 
  • Must be booked in advance.

Program Offerings

Pre-K - Grade 5

  • All Around the Farm: Enjoy structured time in our interactive exhibits to learn about agriculture and rural life in Loudoun County at the turn of the 20th century.  🔷🌿⚙️ 🟧 
  • Grandma's Kitchen: Explore life in a pre-electrification rural kitchen. What has changed? 🔷🌿⚙️
  • Historic Games, Toys, and Chores:  Discover the chores done around the farm and play some toys and games that have been popular for generations. 🔷⚙️🟧 
  • I'll Trade You: Learn about bartering and trade in our Waxpool General Store. 🔷⚙️🟧 
  • Schoolhouse: What was school life like for students in Virginia in the 19th and 20th century? 🔷⚙️ 🟧
  • Simple Machines: Discover the simple machines that have made daily chores easier for farmers. 🔷⚙️
  • Time for Change: Travel back to 1909 in the Waxpool General Store and discover that a dollar used to go a long way.  🔷⚙️
  • Weights and Measures:  Learn about volume and weight, and enjoy a potato sack race or relay race.​  🔷⚙️ 

Grades K-8

  • Archaeology: Learn about what archaeology is, farmers' role in archaeological discovery, and the history of Indigenous archaeology in Virginia. Students participate in a sand box dig to learn more about archaeological field methods. 🔷⚙️
  • Hammers & Horseshoes: Visit both our working Blacksmith Forge and Workhorse Collection. Learn about why blacksmithing was important to life on a farm and horse powered farm equipment ($100 minimum or 20 paid attendees).  🔷🌿⚙️🟧
  • Loudoun's First Farmers - Native Americans: Learn about Native American history as well as the recognized tribes of modern Virginia. Discover how they used natural resources and what made these people Loudoun's First Farmers.   🔷🌿
  • Plant It: Be a scientist for the day and observe, explore, and experiment with plants through hands-on activities. 🌿⚙️
  • Soil & Composing: Learn all about the world of composting, worms, and dirt! Create your own compost bag to take home.🌿🟧
  • Spinning & Weaving: Learn about how we get our clothes, from washing and carding animal, plant, and insect fibers all the way through spinning and processing into a final product. 🔷🌿

Grades 3-8

  • Farming with the Land: Learn all about farmers' relationship with the land, the influence of industrialization on agriculture, and sustainable agricultural practices. Conduct a soil erosion science experiment for hands-on learning. 🔷🌿
  • Hands on History: Tour the museum's permanent exhibits and learn the fundamentals of archaeology, history, and museum practice. Gain hands on experience with our artifacts and speak with our curator.  🔷🟧
  • Mapping: Use our surveying chains and learn about the history of mapmaking and surveying. 🔷⚙️
  • Museum Tour: We will take yours students on a guided tour throughout the gallery. 🔷🌿⚙️🟧
  • Tenant Revolt: Learn about the role of tenant farmers and the uprising led by General James Cleveland in 1775, on the eve of the American Revolution. 🔷

Seasonal Programs

  • Bees and Other Pollinators (Spring): Explore our live observation honey beehive and learn about how pollinators help plants grow. 🌿
  • Apples All Around (Fall): Learn about apples and use a historic press to make cider! 🔷🌿⚙️
  • Pumpkin Parade (Fall): Learn about all the different varieties of pumpkins and the history of this fall favorite.  🔷🌿

This Saturday, August 22, the Loudoun Heritage Farm Museum will be hosting a children's birthday party from 10:00-12:00pm. The gallery will remain open to the public, but we recommend visiting after the party.
